10/10/2006 Entry: "johnny cash"

well sunday we had a layover in Chicago...so we had to sit in the airport for 2 hours at about 7am...the guys crashed on the floor of the airport...i think that is one of the imperative characteristics you must possess to be in a band...the ability to sleep anywhere, anytime...

anyway, i wasn't in the mood to fall asleep and wake up with my neck hurting...so i watched " i walk the line" and...i have been reading Johnny Cash's autobiography, and man, i'm getting a lot out of it!!! one of the things that's hit me the most is how SIMPLE the musical experience used to be. then as an artist you HAD to be able to do what you recorded 'live" without accompanied vocal tracks, etc. it was all about that "live" REAL experience...now, due to all the technological accomplishments we have (which im not saying are always bad) ANYONE can BE a singer. for instance, the industry can pick a pretty face, put them in the studio, and though they may not be able to sing a lick, they just go back and digitally fix their bad pitch. then they sell their face and body, rather than their music...back in the day, they were passionate about the music itself, IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!! it was all about the MOMENT! whether it was motown, johnny cash, bob dylan, hendrix, joplin, etc...they went in the studio, plugged in, and everyone would just play/sing at the same time...they HAD to do it right! it was ONE SHOT! No one coming in and fixing it...it was raw emotion

so amongst all of our technological advances i think we have somewhere lost the appreciation for something really special! it's the love for the REAL DEAL, love for the art, the writing, the music and those REAL moments...yes, people still appreciate it, and there are a ton of great writers, singers that are popular...i'm not implying there aren't...it's just...i dunno...it just seems the simplicity has been lost, and that passion for the music, the deep fascination and love of that isn't like it used to be...that's something we have exchanged for convenience here...the simplicity and vulnerability.

this is all really deeply burried inside and just starting to surface, so making my thoughts make sense is kind of difficult right now...it's just something that's been on my mind and im having more of an appreciation for...

But, seriously, it seems like all this world is about is money, money, money. I get sick and tired of it. A lot of popular artists these days get so rich off of their looks- even if they sing like.. well, I won't say what. I love it that all of INHABITEDs songs come from the soul, and they deal with REAL STUFF... and Sara, you have an amazing voice!! I love how you sing from the heart. YOU GO, GIRL!!! God definetly has a plan 4 your life... now i just need to pray that I find a plan for mine! (lol!)

Amen. Music has gone kinda crazy in the last few decades, its just been cheapened like most things! But there is always hope:) I think there's a lot of sweet artists going around, who are not only giving out a 'good' message but a 'radical' message. I've never been into just good, i'd rather have something that pushes the envelope:)

On that note, who is excited for Switchfoots new cd in December!!! woooo.

The best way to tell who's real and who's fake, is to HEAR them live. Sara, you all sound amazing live...it sounds like you guys could perform and put that right on the cd and no one would know. You put soooo much emotion and feeling into your songs, music, and performance you can really tell it's real.

On another note....there will be a new addition to the inhabited fan club in about 9 months!!! I found out on Tuesday that I'm pregnant!!! Be praying for me. I need it!

I totalllllllllyyyyy agree..I loathe watching those award shows and seeing a perfect barbie lip sinkin' and struttin' her stuff on stage..ahh...makes me wanna scream! It's also really disappointing when you listen to this song and you're like..wow they are really tallented.........then you see that person live and you're like...wow I hope that was an off night! Someone who is trully tallented to me should be just as good if not better live...I just get so sick of "hollywood" or whatever you wanna call it..making people out to be something they are not just to make another buck..ahhhh...I hear ya girl..I hear ya..And I totally could never sleep in an airport, I usually have to sit next to these freaky people and I'm scared I'll get like ..gum in my hair or spit in my drink when I wake up...blehhhh

Shakiera, for example, she cant sing but shes beautiful and has the latino dancing flares and it SHOULD be about the music......but its not!!!! I have friends who have strong opinions about music and only like bands that actually write whats in their heart and actually care about what they're saying!!!! Thats why I like bands like you!! You care about what the music is about and show it in your actions to back it up!! Anyway..on a higher note, I have no idea how you can sleep anywhere!!!!!! I have tried to sleep on the floor, on anything moving, you name it....i've tried!!!! I saw in one of the past pics that Chad was wearing the sweater that he got at Spirit West Coast 2006!!!! I remember when he got it cause at the second show you guys did, I came early to talk to you guys and I ask him about it!!!! Im still trying to find one just like it!!!!!!!!
