11/06/2006 Entry: "maxim magazine and wisdom live on the same street"

ok so here's there deal, i got SO much out of this chapter that it was TOO much content to put into one post, so here is PART ONE of Proverbs 2

V1-3 “…if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and IF YOU CALL OUT for insight and CRY ALOUD for understanding, and if you LOOK for it as for silver and SEARCH for it as for hidden treasure, THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

V3 Something I found really interesting here, is that it says when we "call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding" that God will hear us! I know there are many ways we can pray, whether it is through tears, a whisper, written words, in song, or simply screaming at the top of our lungs. I don’t believe prayer is about a particular method, but it is more about the issue of our hearts. So, it made me wonder why he put so much emphasis on verbalizing our request here. I started thinking…We speak of the things we are passionate about, whether it's music, sports, love, fashion, cars, relationships, etc...We can't help but speak of them because we are passionate about them! So that may be one reason it says to verbalize this prayer….because we are pushing pride aside, and showing an outward expression that we are truly serious about our request.

Then it says, “if you LOOK for it (wisdom) as silver and SEARCH for it as for hidden treasure”, you will find it. What do we do when we seek for silver and gold…or in our terms, the dollar bill? Hours are spent pouring over marketing plans, research, investing, and working our rear ends off to produce the money! Money! Money! We are dedicated! We are committed! There is an intense level of seriousness involved! I think it means, look, if you are serious, then seek wisdom with that same zeal. This isn’t about setting a timer to 3 minutes, and praying. It’s not about a checklist. It’s about an authentic passion, and a genuine heart!

6 “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Spiritual wisdom is not something we can conjure up! It is the direct result of spending TIME in His presence! NOTHING ELSE can bring about that kind of fruit. Yes, we can learn theology all day long, and this is just my personal opinion, but I think this wisdom he speaks about is something that man alone cannot teach us! Many times we think church attendance will suffice, but i think it’s deeper than that. It’s about communication with a living God, and His communication with humanity. It’s about listening PERSONALLY, not having someone else SEEKING GOD FOR US, AND sharing what they learned! Yes, we need teaching, but I'm talking about personal seeking here, and spiritual discernment being the result of that.

7 “He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair--every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. “

What a promise.
11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.

I think discretion is like being cautious. What are we cautious about, or are we? Do we guard our minds? Are we even cautious at all about what we watch on tv or the images filling our computer screen? Now, I’m not Miss Myspace, but I do check our Inhabited myspace. Point is for the last two to three weeks I’ve logged on, there is this banner for “Maxim” flashing in everyone's face!!! The thought has crossed my mind several times…”man, I bet that is such a huge temptation for guys to visit that site...”and even for girls to compare themselves and see what they should do to look "sexy"! Now, I’m sure there is some way in the human brain to justify looking at “Maxim”, not that it makes it right, but we justify LOTS of things that aren’t right! JUST REMEMBER that justifying one thing makes it easier to justify the next! It can easily become like a stepping stone and lead to more and more and more and more…At some point “Maxim” won’t satisfy! I know that's hard for some guys to imagine, but there becomes a hunger for more! In time, you can get sucked into a lifestyle of addiction. Pornography dethrones caution all together. I say all that because I care, and I know that SIN IS DECEITFUL! It masks itself in beauty and promises satisfaction, but always leaves us empty. So, BE CAREFUL! BE CAUTIOUS! USE DISCIPLINE, it pays off!

The problem is that we often times fill our minds with the same junk as everyone else through movies, tv, music, mags, etc...Not that these things are all bad, but we need to have standards of what we will and won't allow in our minds! Even if people think we are crazy, we need to USE CAUTION because it will protect the gateway to our hearts. It may seem extreme, but some times extreme measures need to be taken to keep us from falling or pick us up after having already fallen!

It’s like this…the other day i heard that song "Promiscuous" playing on the radio, and I listened for a minute, and I thought, "dang that is so bad, but it's so dang catchy!! Now, to the normal person, listening to that song, dancing to it, and singing along is A-ok...but my point is, that in time, you get those kinds of messages burned in your mind, and they eventually enter your heart! Then the things that you viewed as wrong, don't seem as bad as they used to. Now, I'm not saying over night, you'll turn your choir robe in for a lil outfit and be dancin’ in the clubs with every boy or girl you meet. We have all watched and listened to things we shouldn't have, and it doesn't just zap us into someone different overnight. It's a PROCESS of change. I'm just saying, remember that THE MIND IS POWERFUL!!! IT IS THE BATTLEFIELD! WE MUST BE WISE ABOUT WHAT WE ALLOW INTO OUR MINDS, because in time, those things WILL affect our actions, and even blur the lines of right and wrong!

In closing...just check out all the verses that have the "mind", "heart", "thoughts", mentioned and how that relates to what we allow into our minds. Now I'm aware often times we can't help some things we are bombarded with, but I'm talking about what we CHOOSE to allow into our minds. ok i could list the whole Bible at this point :) i'll just give a few verses...there are so many...

Allie-hey there! first of all i REALLY REALLY REALLY respect you for your honesty. i think it's honesty like that that helps other people be honest because they realize they are not alone. One of the worst things that comes along with sin many times...or i should say secret sins, is isolation and then when you have isolation freedom looks like an impossibility! ya know? so thanks for your honesty and your encouraging word! I think one of the most important things is renewing the MIND! The Bible talks about how we can renew our mind and also talks about "taking thoughts captive" etc...so continue to stay in the word and press on! we are all in a battle, so we all must fight but the victory is ours through Jesus! HE IS OUR STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS!

kirsty-yeah, i know what you're saying...my friend was telling me the other day her friend who had not been in church in a long long time went and was really needing to hear from God...well when she was walking up to the door, she saw a girl come out and light a cig! she had "help" carved in her fingers. and the youth pastor stuck his head out of the door and said, "if you decide to finish that cig, you can forget coming back in" so this girl who was "seeking" and in need of being ministered to ended up sharing with this girl smokin outside...and i was like wow! it made me sick! but i say that because...well it was something you said that made me think of that...oh about feeling free at church without that fear of judgement...and that story is prime example of what you're talking about...anyway, i will reply to your email in a bit...amazing. thank you once again!

Josh-it's true God can change us into the men and women he wants us to be...that's awesome and it's all about that whole "seeking" thing..its His strength not our own!

Sara...you are so right. Tim just preached a message to the church a couple of months ago about the mind being a battlefield. This was right along those lines. I've heard so many people saying that they read maxim, stuff, and even Cosmo magazines for the articles. But, you know that all that is just a put on. If they were really reading a mag for the articles why don't they pick up something with out a half naked girl or guy on it?

I could go on, but I think you've said everything that I could possibly say.

Sara, you're the greatest...keep standing up and speaking out boldly!!!!

Thank you so much for putting those thoughts out there! I have felt for a long time that there are some things that us christians should just avoid. It can be so hard to stay true when all you hear and see from the worldly stuff is lies that tell us not to live lives that God would be pleased with. There is one verse I think in psalms but I am not sure, it says, "I will put before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate." I love that verse. Anyway, thanks so much for letting me know that I am not the only one who thinks that kind of stuff is junk and we should stay away from it. It is really cool that you take the time to think about these things.

That was a great journal entry there Sara. I agree that myspace.com has those ads that want you to click on them but I never click on them I just download or listen to the cool music from your band not give in to temptation. I agree Promisicious is a catchy song and that is how Secular music just filled with catchy tunes and lots of bad words like swearing and hating people and all of that bad stuff. I don't listen to Secular music a lot just some times but still I listen to more Christian music because it is positive music to listen to and encourages me and helps God show me things through the positive music. I have looked at porn on the net too and I still struggle with that now but still God is helping me through it. I just keep the faith with God and He will help me through anything. The turning point in my life is when I went to Bible college for two years where God changed me and showed me amazing things and make me a stronger Christian and stronger with my faith in God. God is still changing me and making my faith with Him even more stronger. We aren't perfect but God can still use us and change us into the men and women of God that He wants us to be. So that is my story and some encouraging words for you. God bless you and your band.

Great thoughts:) Its very true what you say about really SEEKING and not just seeing it as some checklist, but it requires your whole being. I have been realizing that a lot, not only when it comes to wisdom and such but our whole faith, there are so many things I am seeing I need to change, and be intentional about doing differently than our western culture says

I also love that you talked about porn and stuff, because I think part of the problem is that these issues aren't ever addressed in church so it's very hard for people struggling to find a place where they can talk about it without being judged. I was at a talk a few weeks back about abuse and bad family practices and I was hearing these horrible statistics about how much incest and abuse goes on within the church.

I've been really blessed in being involved in communities where people are comfortable to share some of these deep things and have the freedom to start healing from it all but its very sad when a person goes to a church and doesn't feel like they can share things for fear of judgement. We really need to get back to doing community, so that we can help each towards being freed from this junk. Although obviously it is the work of God, as you say who keeps our hearts, minds, and souls and gives us wisdom I think their is power in walking with other people, admitting even the darkest of struggles and starting the heaing process with that support behind you.

I kinda got off the track there a bit form the subject, just some things I have been thinking of lately that kinda applied:)

Ok, so you know how I saaid I write songs? Well, I write for alot of reasons, and one is to try to understand what God is showing me. That is how I got this song.

The verses that really stood out to me were Proverbs 2:12-22 where it talks about ungodly people who try to lead the children of God to sin. I think more than actual people, this was talking about the secular world we live in. It seems like theres pressure on us everyday to comform into the pattern of sin. And sin ultimately will lead to destruction.

I know that song you are talking about, it was by Nelly Furtado. She just breaks my heart when I see her. She was so beautiful and she had such a beautiful voice. But she couldn't see it, she tried to loose weight and she hurt her vocal chords from it. She is over that now. But instead of sharing her experiences and how she came out of it, she is writing songs that encourage promiscuity and put emphasis on physical beauty. She is just one of the examples of what we as teens are expected of. And we have adults twice our age ENCOURAGING us.

But when we pursue a life of purity and when we hold tight to our beliefs it makes us strong, and that strength is God on our side."turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding". That is 11 words, and yet its the key to getting ahead in life. Everyone makes mistakes, but to be wise you can learn from others mistakes instead of making them all over again. But th only source of pure wisdom is Christ. Even if you were the smartest peson in the world, it would all be for nothing without Christ.

Thats what I got out on this chapter, and it is so cool, thanks for pointing it out Sara!

Sara, I really kno what you are talking about. I'm not proud of it, but lat year I was in a deadly struggle with porn, and those images are imbeded into my mind and heart. It's hard for me to maintain a loving relationshp with a boy now, with me seeing everything that I saw online.And for a while, and sometimes still today, my image of right and rong are messed up.
Don't pollute yourself- keep yourself clean and holy. Don't defile God's bride. DON'T PUT YOURSELF INTO A PLACE OF TEMPTATION!!!! I am praying for every guy and girl who are being tempted and sucked in and struggling to get out of the mess of sin. JESUS LOVES YOU!!!!!
